With works from the 1950s onward, the coffee-table book \"Francis Bacon: Human Presence\" explores Bacon's deep connection to portraiture and how he challenged traditional definitions of the genre. From his reactions to portraiture by earlier artists to large-scale paintings commemorating lost loved ones, works from private and public collections reveal Bacon's life story. <\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to the artist's self-portraits, Lucian Freud, Isabel Rawsthorne and lovers Peter Lacy and George Dyer are also portrayed. This book, the first publication in more than 20 years devoted to Francis Bacon's portraits, accompanies the exhibition of the same name opening at the National Portrait Gallery in London in October 2024. From his famous triptychs and paintings of ghostly figures to tender and psychologically revealing individual portraits, the figurative works in this publication chart the development of a pioneering artist and highlight the influence of his colleagues and other artists.<\/p>\n

The book also includes biographies and photographs of Bacon and his surroundings, bringing out less told stories.
