Legendary photographer Co Rentmeester is being honored at FOAM with a retrospective featuring his iconic photography. To coincide with his expo at the Amsterdam photography museum, there is now the beautiful coffee table book ''Witnessing Life,'' which contains more than two hundred photographs from Rentmeester's archive, ranging from early reportages to later constructed images. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The cover of Rentmeester's photo book shows Michael Jordan in his famous jumpman pose, an image named one of the 100 most influential photos of all time by TIME Magazine, which was stolen by Nike and still adorns the famous Air-Jordan sneakers as an image mark. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The living legend of photography was a jack of all trades. From war photography, sports coverage, nature pictures to advertising photography. In his lifetime, Rentmeester won many an award for his outstanding photography. These included several World Press Photo Awards for his photograph of an American tank shooter, and a photograph of Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz in which his right eye appears flawless. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rentmeester refused to conform to the visual codes of his time. He viewed color as a moral choice, the camera as a means of reflection and each image as a proposition. Along with his many covers for LIFE magazine, his photographs represent milestones in visual culture. This book is not a retrospective, but a lens: a journey through the archive of a photographer who grew into a global icon.<\/p>\n
