From existential paintings and upside-down painted motifs to crudely carved wooden sculptures and remixes of earlier paintings, Georg Baselitz's art remains challenging.

Georg Baselitz, known for his bold, simple but pioneering strategy of painting the motif upside down, has remained a challenging artist since the early 1960s. His work is always highly charged but surprisingly diverse, beginning with the raw, existential male figures that were removed from his first solo exhibition because of their indecency, and the "Heroes" series depicting disabled and exposed figures in a devastated landscape. During this development, the pictorial space became increasingly fragmented, and by the end of the decade the artist turned the world completely upside down: trees, factories, eagles or naked self-portraits were actually painted upside down. This soon allowed him to paint freely and engage in conceptual color schemes or unusual themes, such as men eating oranges, Soviet propaganda paintings or, more recently, so-called remixes in which he re-approaches his own earlier work as a dialogue in time. Baselitz was already a master at drawing, woodcarving and engraving, but from 1980 he also made rough sculptures that he carved out of wood with an axe and chainsaw, before adding bronze to his materials in the late 2000s.

This book contains large-format reproductions of more than 400 works of art in all media, plus installation images and portrait photographs. The texts approach the subject from different perspectives: there is a portrait of Baselitz and his dark sense of humor by veteran connoisseur Richard Shiff and an essay on the formation of his art and development as a painter by critic Jonathan Jones. Statements by the artist and an illustrated biography complete this unprecedented exploration of Georg Baselitz's work.

Specifications
Title: Georg Baselitz
Authors: Richard Shiff, Jonathan Jones
Publisher: TASCHEN
Format: 250 x 334 x 50 mm
Size: 616 pages
Weight: 3.45 kg
Language: English, French, German
Material: Hardcover
ISBN: 9783836599108

View our extensive range of luxury art books of the world's most famous old and new masters; from Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Vermeer, Warhol, KAWS, Hockney, Basquiat and many others.

Taschen’s koffietafelboek ‘Georg Baselitz’ presenteert het volledige spectrum van Baselitz’ werk uit de periode 1960 tot nu, in verbluffende diepgang en detail.
