Sometimes subtle and harmonious, sometimes rigorous and almost final. Where the Overtoom now ends, in 1902 a bridge still connected the Nassaukade with the Stadhouders kade. Where barges brought in their peat from Drenthe and pottery from Friesland, houseboats are now moored, and the first canal boat that sailed through the canals in 1912 is not even that different from today's ubiquitous version.<\/p>\n<p>Progress is sometimes accompanied by a dose of melancholy, not least because of the presence of our mostly stately ancestors striding through the scene with their dated modes of transportation.
