Morocco: Kingdom of Golf
There are few places where the spirit of the game of golf blends so seamlessly with a royal tradition as in Morocco. Assouline's coffee-table book 'Morocco: Kingdom of Golf' celebrates more than a century of golf, as does the 50th anniversary of the prestigious Hassan II Golf Trophy.

There are few places where the spirit of the game of golf blends so seamlessly with a royal tradition as in Morocco. The sport's roots in the Kingdom date back to 1914, with the establishment of the Royal Country Club of Tangier, the very first golf course ever built in Morocco. Today, there are nearly 50 courses across the country, attracting some of the best players in the world.
Assouline's coffee table book ‘Morocco: Kingdom of Golf’ is set to celebrate more than a century of golf, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Hassan II Golf Trophy. The tournament, founded in 1971 by the late King Hassan II, reflects his visionary dedication to the development of golf throughout the country. He worked with some of the world's leading golf course designers, including Robert Trent Jones Sr. (who designed the magnificent Royal Golf Dar Es Salam) and Jack Nicklaus (the designer of the Michlifen Golf & Country Club). In 1993, His Majesty also launched the Lalla Meryem Cup, a prestigious competition for top female players. Today, His Majesty King Mohammed VI has charged his brother, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, with carrying on their father's legacy by further expanding the sport, nurturing new talent and investing in the future of golf in Morocco.
In May 2026, the Hassan II Golf Trophy will celebrate its milestone anniversary, celebrating not only the tournament but also the sport's enduring passion and excellence. Over the years, Steinbreder has made 15 trips to Morocco and traversed the entire kingdom, making him the ideal person to tell this story, which also includes original photographs by Dutch photographer Ann Dokter.
