The intimate story of a star before her demise and a young photographer on her way to the top. In TASCHEN's coffee table book "Marilyn & Me," a collector's edition of only 1,712 numbered copies signed by the photographer, Lawrence Schiller combines his extraordinary Monroe portfolio with personal memories of Marilyn, told with tact, humor and compassion. The result is a genuine and unexpected portrait that captures the star during her final struggle.
"You're already famous, now you're going to make me famous," said photographer Lawrence Schiller to Marilyn Monroe when they were discussing the pictures he would take of her. "Don't be so arrogant," Marilyn replied, "photographers can easily be replaced." It was 1962 and Schiller, 25, was on assignment for Paris Match magazine. He already knew Marilyn - they had met on the set of Let's Make Love - but nothing could have prepared him for the day she appeared naked during a pool scene for the movie Something's Got to Give.
The coffee-table book "Marilyn & Me" is an intimate story of a legend before her demise and a young photographer on her way to the top. Schiller's original text and photographs - more than two-thirds of which have never or rarely been published - take us back to that time and to the surprising bond Marilyn had with a boy from Brooklyn, a boy of great ambition but little experience. It is a story never before told, with tact, humor and compassion. The result is a genuine and unexpected portrait that captures the star during her final struggle.
