Alfred Eisenstaedt of LIFE magazine and Italian actress and goddess Sophia Loren had a unique bond. 'Eisie' photographed her several times between the early 1960s and the late 1970s. TASCHEN's numbered and Loren-signed coffee table book "Sophia by Eisenstaedt," a collector's edition, contains nearly two hundred of these photographs, most of which have not been published before. They show the famous beauty on movie sets, with her family and simply as her fabulous, spontaneous self.

Sophia Loren first met Alfred "Eisie" Eisenstaedt in 1961 when he photographed her for LIFE, the leading photo magazine of the 20th century. It was the beginning of a decades-long friendship between the enchanting international star and the "father of photojournalism. Loren was establishing herself as both a glamorous and serious actress and was on the verge of becoming one of the most famous women in the world, while Eisenstaedt had already been working on his legendary photographic career for four decades.

The photo book "Sophia by Eisenstaedt" presents nearly two hundred never-before-seen color and black-and-white photographs from the 1960s and 1970s, carefully selected from the LIFE magazine archives, with the original negatives scanned in New York. These images have been lovingly compiled and presented, with the full approval of Loren and the Eisenstaedt estate in an unprecedented collaboration. The spontaneous behind-the-scenes photographs are accompanied by tear sheets from the many LIFE cover stories Eisenstaedt has created about Loren. She is effortlessly beautiful, vivid and daring, but at times deeply introspective in her private life, which Eisenstaedt was privileged to witness and masterfully captured with his signature blend of artistry and humanity, and his photographs tell the story of the most dynamic period of her remarkable career and life.
