The coffee table book "Fenix: A Museum as Metaphor" is the official book of FENIX, the new migration museum in Rotterdam that explores the timeless story of human migration in a changing world through a series of encounters with art, architecture, photography and history. A building with an iconic design by leading architectural firm MAD.

The 16,000-square-meter 1923 building is being radically remodeled according to a design by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the internationally renowned Beijing-based architecture firm. The warehouse, located on the south bank of the Maas River in Rotterdam's historic harbor district, served as an important building for storage and shipping for the Holland-America Line, a Dutch freight and passenger line. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Holland-America Line facilitated the journeys of millions of migrants arriving and departing from surrounding ports.

Visitors will immediately notice the architectural masterpiece, the Tornado, an organic, dynamic structure reminiscent of rising air flowing up from the first floor and through the roof to a platform above the city - an uplifting symbol of the journeys migrants have made worldwide.

FENIX explores the timeless story of human migration in a changing world through a series of encounters with art, architecture, photography and history, aiming to redefine the role of a museum for the next generation. Inside the building, a series of large gallery spaces over two floors will house the museum's growing art and historical collection, as well as a series of commissions by emerging artists from around the world, telling stories of migration from their perspective.
