Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was the last virtuoso of Japanese woodcut. The coffee table book 'Yoshitoshi: One Hundred Aspects of the Moon,' published between 1885 and 1892, is the crowning glory of his work. The book is a beautiful facsimile edition of the last masterpiece of 'ukiyo-e' and reproduces each print at its original size, along with an explanation of the subject. From a limited edition of 3,000 copies, 1,000 copies are now available.
The art book that mainly illustrates stories from history and legends united by the motif of the moon is full of paradoxes. To continue the tradition of ukiyo-e, Yoshitoshi drew stylistic inspiration from the very forces that rendered it obsolete, namely Western art and mass media such as photography and lithography. As if realizing they were witnessing the end of an era, the public responded enthusiastically to the artist's innovative series. Many of the individual prints were sold out on the morning of their publication.
An extensive introductory text, supplemented by many comparative illustrations, describes Yoshitoshi's career and the creation of this series. This book, printed and bound to the highest specifications, is a must for lovers of Japanese prints.
