Ed van der Elsken is one of the most innovative and leading photographers in the Netherlands. Driven by boundless curiosity, he captured his vision of the world in a visual language all his own. The Rijksmuseum is currently hosting the exhibition ‘Ed van der Elsken. Up Close’ by Amsterdam’s most famous street photographer, Ed van der Elsken.

The Coffee Table Book ‘Ed van der Elsken: Up Close’ offers a unique, richly illustrated overview of his multifaceted body of work. In addition to iconic photographs, the book contains a wealth of previously unpublished material from his work archive, including contact sheets, letters, notes, and book designs. Drawing on these sources, photography curator Hinde Haest sheds new light on Van der Elsken’s working methods and artistic development and demonstrates how closely his life and work were intertwined.

The Exhibition ‘Up Close’ Spread across nine galleries, the exhibition presents the key moments in Van der Elsken’s career, from his first steps as a photojournalist in the early 1950s to the creation of his final photo book in the late 1980s. The exhibition and the accompanying book show how he pioneered, experimented, searched, refined his craft, sometimes doubted himself, and ultimately became the most important photographer of his generation.
